A Study of Antimetabolites

چکیده
Pettus gave everything he had as a medical missionary in China and Dr. Edward H. Hume has drawn a clear and sympathetic picture of this man, his aspirations, and those qualities which distinguished him as a medical scientist at home and abroad. On 23 November 1945 was received the melancholy cablegram from Huangping, China, which read as follows: "Dr. Pettus killed in airplane accident at Huangping Kweichow. Immediately sending men to the scene. Have wired Fulton [Dr. Brank Fulton]. Please cable instructions regarding burial . . . H. C. Chang, Dean." The crash had actually occurred on 18 November. Pettus thus had only ten years in the active practice of medicine in his chosen field as a medical missionary in Central China. Sir William Osler once referred to John McCrae who wrote the imperishable lines, Flanders Fields, as one who was "doubly dead because he died so young." This sentiment applies equally to Winston Pettus, M.D. 1937, of the Yale School of Medicine.

Anti-VEGF Agents with or without Antimetabolites in Trabeculectomy for Glaucoma: A Meta-Analysis
PURPOSE We aimed to evaluate the intraoperative application of antimetabolites compared with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents with or without antimetabolites in trabeculectomy (Trab) for glaucoma. METHODS Relevant studies were selected through extensive search using PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases in August 2013. The primary efficacy est...
متن کاملThe kinetic properties of switch antimetabolites.
BACKGROUND Maintaining homeostasis is the biological function of negative feedback, a process that plays a well-understood role in the biochemistry of antimetabolite drugs. An equally important property of living systems--the ability to respond to external stimuli by switching rapidly from one state to another--is mediated by positive feedback. Kinetic analysis of multi-enzyme biochemical pathw...
متن کاملEffect of ethionine alone or with amino acids on tumor growth, carcass weight, and nonprotein amino acids in rat liver.
Studies have been made previously on the ef fect of ethionine on the free amino acids in the livers of tumorous and nontumorous rats of the Long-Evans (6, 8), Sprague-Dawley (13), and Wistar (9) strains. Attempts at dual blocking, with pairs of antimetabolites, have also been re ported (12). The observation that certain amino acids may function as antimetabolites in inhibiting tumor growth (3, ...
متن کاملIdentification of anticancer drugs for hepatocellular carcinoma through personalized genome‐scale metabolic modeling
Genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) have proven useful as scaffolds for the integration of omics data for understanding the genotype-phenotype relationship in a mechanistic manner. Here, we evaluated the presence/absence of proteins encoded by 15,841 genes in 27 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients using immunohistochemistry. We used this information to reconstruct personalized GEMs for six...

alpha-Aminoisobutyryl-d-alanine, d-alanyl-alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, and alpha-amino-isobutyryl-alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, proposed as antimetabolites of d-alanyl-d-alanine in bacterial cell wall synthesis, failed to inhibit bacterial growth.
متن کاملAntimetabolite Activity of Uridine and Cytidine
With the realization in 1940 (1) that structural analogues of a metabolite frequently prevent utilization of that metabolite, it became possible to develop antimetabolites which block specific biosynthetic pathways. By blocking various steps in a biosynthetic pathway, antimetabolites are useful for elucidating intermediary metabolism. It was the object of the present study to investigate the bi...
